“The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.” ― Sun Tzu, The Art of Warg FACE CLAIM:- - -
HEIGHT:Six Feet Precisely
WEIGHT:One Hundred and Fifty-Two Pounds.
APPEARANCE:Kisuke Urahara, an average man standing precisely six feet tall and weighing somewhere in the region of one hundred and fifty pounds. A common occurrence with most, if not all, Shinigami; Urahara would appear to be in the latter years of his second decade if scrutinized by the average passer-by, however, a more accurate account of his age lies within the musty tomes of one thousand years plus. Not that he would divulge that information to just anyone willingly of course.
A well kept man, despite the situation he and his makeshift band of allies have found themselves in, the perpetual five o'clock shadow persistent across his chin and jawline serve to highlight what little maturity Urahara seems to possess. Something of a ladies man, a claim not entirely without warrant; commanding a charming smile and childish disposition, Urahara is capable of concealing his thoughts and motives behind a mixture of self-deprecating, narcissistic comments and a mask of aloofness.
Faded yellow, like that of straw, colours the follicles sprouting from a certain honest, handsome and perverted businessman. Be it the shape of his head, or the flow of his hair, but it appears as if Kisuke Urahara wore a hat a little too often as a child; Parting at the top of his head, the hair presses closely against his skin as it travels downward toward his ears. Onward from the level of the lobe of his ears, Urahara's hair branches outward in multiple short spikes in a semi-circle around the back of his head, getting progressively longer until it reaches the nape of his neck. The fringe section protrudes from his scalp in three prongs, almost like a trident; one at either side of his face that curve inward slightly around his cheek bones and one aimed straight forward in a column, splitting into a 'V' shape around the bridge of his nose. His eyes remain completely free from obstruction, however, small spikes hovering above his brow in the sections in-between the shafts of hair.
Gifted with soft angular features and a squared, albeit small, chin, the blond Shinigami certainly does strike a masculine chord within the sometimes gender ambiguous life-after-death populace. With large and typically 'child-like' eyes, their small light gray pupils contrast well in that his outward and somewhat obvious appearance is one of joy and laughter, while his inner being is one of stoic intelligence and depth of emotional, often characterized by smaller pupils. His nose is... A nose, nothing much to expand upon there; the bridge is flat and straight and the tip is pointy and is neither up-turned, nor down-turned.
In the past it has been said, "The clothes make the man." But in Kisuke Urahara's case, perhaps nothing more truthful could be said in terms of his appearance; the nickname 'Mr. Hat-and-Clogs' came about after dawning his now trademark white and green striped bucket hat and Geta 'Wooden Sandals' since his exile. A look not easily forgotten. Rather than the traditional Shihakushō 'Garment of Dead Souls' Urahara, quite rightly, wears an all green kimono-hakama combination with an accompanying green obi belt. Light and comfortable, the material is both durable and machine washable. The cuff and hem of each respective piece of clothing is also shorter than the norm, the hakama more so, perhaps an addition to the comfortability aspect of his new attire. Urahara also sports a haori similar in respect to the Captains of Soul Society.
“Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak.” ― Sun Tzu, The Art of War LIKES: -Science -New Things -Shiny Things -Playing the Fool -Secrets -Socialising
DISLIKES: -Disrespect -Disloyalty -Having to be serious -Mauyri Kurotsuchi
NEGATIVE TRAITS: -Secretive -Manipulative -Stubborn -Infuriatingly Idiotic
POSITIVE TRAITS: -Intelligent [To the nth degree] -Confident -Joyful -Caring
EXTRAS:Anyone and everyone that has had the opportunity of trading pleasantries, small talk, insults or even just happen to glance in his general direction once in a while, with Kiskue Urahara would agree he is a very complex person, compounded by his often stark changes in mood, attitude and lunar phase. Although, to give him his due, such times where changes are wholly apparent are usually times when the situation desperately calls for them. In that respect he may seem slow, or dumb to the seriousness and magnitude of most tense, life threatening moments, however, a spark of child-like naivety still exists within his aged and worn soul; granting him the gift of hope that such dark times will never come. Such hope is also what makes it hurt all the more when those dark times do rush across the horizon toward those he cares about.
On the outside Urahara has waxed and buffed a very convincing portrayal of whiny aloofness and rude pervertedness, almost to a mirror shine, and while he very much is all of these things; most of these characteristics are exaggerated a great deal. We hope. Fighting through the sticky goo of Urahara's insides, it is apparent he is a very caring and loving person. But with that, he is also fiercely intelligent, ruthlessly logical and as stubborn as a mule. An interesting note; Urahara can also be deadly serious at times, usually he seems to choose the more awkward times, and rather than take offense, his comments are generally discarded as 'trying to be funny, but failing'. There are two main factors which influence these types of behavior; Comfort, and Self Defense.
The 'silly guy' persona is something of a safe place for the former Shinigami Captain to reside in; he doesn't have to acknowledge the responsibilities or the ramifications of his actions, both past and present, to the degree he would if he were serious all the time. But at the same time, he is also a very witty and jovial person seeking the excitement and laughter life, and death, has to offer. Willing to use those close to him and some very elaborate props for a joke, sometimes too much in his own taste and therefore lost to the swine he casts pearls onto. Pervertedness; in the right circumstances Urahara can be extremely crude and opportunistic, but rather than an inflated characteristic, Urahara more than likely relies on this already established cover to save himself unnecessary lines of questioning and severe beatings.
Strange things do happen, but none might be stranger than the rare moments Kiskue Urahara, of his own free and un-inebriated will, chooses to be serious. Aside from his work and research, which has in the past taken precedence over personal hygiene, Urahara has an aversion to 'those moments'. Perhaps it cuts too deep a chunk from his desired happy-go-lucky ideal existence, forcing him to realize and eyes open interact with the shittyness walking around and talking to one another accumulates, but old Hat and Clogs does everything within his power to prevent and avoid times like those. However, when it is clear nothing can be done otherwise, he wastes no energy in getting his head down and doing what needs to be done. Unfortunately 'doing what needs to be done' also carries the idea 'for the greater good' with it in tow. Meaning; if he has to make the call, he will use those around him like pawns without a second, maybe third, thought. If given the option however, he would much rather use everyone like a Queen.

ZANPAKUTO:name: Benihime
sealed form: In it's sealed state, Benihime takes the form of a 'Shikomizue', or 'Prepared Cane'. Literally, Benihime is a sword contained within a cane and is functional as both. Measuring roughly four and a half feet in total, the hilt section curves as it melds into the cane-like disguise with the remainder being the perfectly straight, single edged blade almost three feet in length. The cylindrical scabbard completing the innocent cane guise also has an interesting ability of it's own; by touching the base of the cane against a living body and applying sufficient force, it is capable of separating the soul from said body.
Needless to say, this fact serves to remove Benihime from the norm of most Zanpakutō, however, this was not always so. In it's youth, Benihime was once sealed in a visually normal katana with a flower shaped guard. At some stage however, Urahara found it prudent to make the necessary changes, perhaps to conceal the fact that his seemingly harmless walking aid was in fact a deadly weapon from the many Shinigami he had encountered since his exile.
spirit: Benihime is one eeeeeeevil little witch of a woman...Not that Kisuke would ever actually be stupid enough to tell her that in their meetings. A little over six feet tall, she is actually taller than the man who wields her, and with her blood red hair and kimono, she strikes quite the intimidating figure. But nothing compares to her eyes, crimson in colour and always with the smallest little pool of blood in the corner of each eye, just waiting to escape into the world.
She enjoys toying with Kisuke, not giving a hoot for all his scientific advancements and intellect, she wants him to use his more physical attributes in combat, and she has no compunction about telling him so. He should not be sitting on the sidelines in her opinion, he should be out there wielding her like the weapon she is. Cleaving their enemies from head to know under the incredible power they share. But still, despite all these differences, there are incredible similarities between weapon and wielder. Whilst she would never admit to doing anything of the sort, she is every bit a manipulator as Urahara is himself. Perhaps even better than he, since she often manages to get what she wants out of the man thought by many to be amongst the most powerful minds in all existence. She's an enigma.
inner world: Kisuke's inner world is a huge, neverending infact, expanse of poppy fields on a warm summers day. With some fair sized of golden wheat in amongst the deep red of the flowers, it actually appears to be a fairly relaxing place. Unless Kisuke is angry. At this point, it's as though Benihime herself has taken a brush to the landscape, as though it were her inner world and not Kisuke's at all. When he feels great anger, though he may not show it on the outside, his inner world changes dramatically. The poppy's bloom even larger than they were before and the wheat simply dies off, blackens and shrivels to the ground. It becomes a place of death, a place of carnage...A place that appears to be covered all over in blood. Perhaps it's this that stops Kisuke from turning his surroundings into this image when he feels such rage?
SHIKAI:release command: Okiro 'Awaken'.
description: Upon release, Benihime transforms to become a back sword similar to the Shashka in many ways, but completely straight with an angled tip and an elongated, curved handle/pommel. The face of the blade widens several centimeters while the point actually starts from the butt of the sword, rather than sharp edge, with a straight gradient downward to the sharp side.
Instead of the traditional guard, Benihime wears a gold skirt several inches long down the blade with a floral pattern at either side. Attached to the base of the skirt, where it meets the handle, is a series of twelve small triangles each an inch long. At the other side red chord is tied around the base of the skirt, and top of the handle, two or three times with the loops protruding an inch or so out from the weapon. At the base of the hand-and-a-half hilt curves a gold metallic cap with a short red tassel left to dangle
type: either list an element, or something else that clearly represents the abilities this zanpakuto will have when released.
techniques: For: Shikai Name: Nake [Scream] Type: Offensive Cost: Low-Mid Range: Mid Description: This ability creates a wave of crimson energy which Urahara can control. While the technique can be used without saying it's name, it is far more powerful when he calls 'Nake' while utilizing it. An interesting technique; Urahara was able to cancel out both Ichigo's 'Getsuga Tenshō' and Yammy's, the Espada, 'Cero' blasts. This technique can either be fired from the arc of a swinging sword, giving it a wide range, or from the tip of the blade for more precise attacks.
For: Shikai Name: Chikasumi no Tate [Blood Mist Shield] Type: Defensive Cost: Mid Range: Self Description: This ability forms a red oval-shaped shield in front of Urahara. The barrier is able to block both physical and Reiatsu based attacks with great success, before succumbing to an excess of damage and begin to crumble completely.
For: Shikai Name: Kamisori [Razor] Type: Offensive Cost: Mid Range: Long Description: A technique that fires an energy arc capable of cutting through materials and substances with relative ease. It was able to cut through a Hierro-protected tentacle of Luppi Antenor. He sends a wave of energy that moves towards the target and is capable of instantly changing direction. Whilst similar to the Nake technique, it allows for more control and cutting power, but at the cost of having to be fired from the tip of the blade, making it less useful against groups of opponents.
For: Shikai Name: Tsuppane [Spurning] Type: Defensive Cost: Low Range: Short - Mid Description: After analyzing a technique's Reishi composition as well as its user's muscle movements while using the technique, by simply drawing a circle of energy with the edge of Benihime and timing it right, this technique can cancel out the enemy's attack at the point of contact. [Takes four posts of combat to fully analyse an opponent, and after that point any attack he's seen before can be cancelled out as long as he is in a position to maneuver his blade in between himself and his opponent to fulfill the requirement of making the circle.]
BANKAI:note that you cannot start off with bankai unless the character is AV-3 or higher.
name: Fīrudo-nai Benihime [Crimson Princess in the Field]
description: Compared to the norm of Bankai, what little there actually is, Kisuke Urahara's transformation is unspectacular to say the least. Upon uttering the phrase, "Bankai." nothing actually happens until a slight breeze passes by or Urahara himself agitates the process; the sword completely breaks down into thousands of tiny shards of light, carried by the wind and his own Reiatsu. They slowly disperse themselves systematically into the environment to a maximum of twenty-five meters in every direction with Urahara at the center and, once they have come into contact with solid structures i.e. the ground, walls, buildings etc, they quickly grow and bloom into Papaver Somniferum, the Opium Poppy.
Several things happen during this 'pollination' process;
Firstly Urahara's hands become drenched in this white light for a few moments, before revealing a second skin of a white bone-like material spanning the length of his hand to his elbow on each arm once the light dissipates. Black metallic gloves and bracers with gold lining combine as they materialize around both hands and arms to form very simple and elegant weapons accentuating Urahara's knuckles and claw-like fingers. The same process affects his legs from foot to knee cap with the same results; a second skin of a white bone-like material appears first, then black metallic greaves with gold lining materialize accentuating his heels, feet and knees.
The Poppys that bloom actually absorb and cannibalize the Reiryoku, nutrients, chemicals and ultimately base elements comprising that which they stem and from the atmosphere surrounding them. This energy is then released as a continual fountain of small shards of white light, similar to those produced in the 'pollination' stage. Urahara naturally absorbs this diffused energy to raise his own Reiatsu and strength exponentially, while at the same time weakens and subdues the Reiatsu of anyone else with range of this diffused energy. Once everything has been absorbed and digested by the Poppies, the waste matter appears as a black ash-like substance and it dies.
In the likely case these spores should come into direct contact with a 'living' person i.e. Shinigami, Arrancar, Human, the same cannibalization of Reiryoku, nutrients, chemicals and base elements would occur. However, they are not invulnerable to being destroyed, as any of the Poppy blooms are, and should the afflicted person realize their energy was being drained could avoid serious harm.
type: Energy Displacement + Absorption + Soporific
stat upgrades: REI + 4; HAN +4
techniques: For: Bankai Name: Nemuri [Sleep] Type: Offensive | Passive Cost: Low Range: Short - Long Description: Urahara's gloves and greaves are permeated with Reiatsu. 'Nemuri' acts much like a powerful tranquilizer; Upon entering the blood stream, not only are the surrounding muscle tissues weakened, neurological and biological responses as well as brain synapse functions are blocked by foreign Reiatsu disrupting the flow within anyone affected, giving the illusion of falling asleep.
As more wounds are inflicted and Urahara's Reiastu invades the victims blood stream, the more the effect compounds and the longer it takes before the victim's natural Reiatsu flow to correct the irregularity. However, someone with sufficient amounts of Reiatsu and willpower would be able to resist and correct the irregularity more easily.
While direct contact does notably increase the amount of Reiatsu pumped into the victims body, the energy produced by each Poppy is essentially the same as Urahara's Reiatsu, meaning only one cut is actually necessary for the weakening effect to increase in severity, although it does take longer. [Opponents within two ranks will fall into a reiatsu induced sleep after 10 posts in the area of effect. Opponents of three or more ranks higher will take a minimum of fifteen within the area, and those more than three ranks lower will be asleep within 6 posts. Each wound inflicted by the greaves and gauntlets make this count fall by one post due to the immediate injection of reiatsu.]
This debilitating effect is only sustained while the affected Character remains within the area created by the Poppy blooms, however, if they were to leave that area, the effects would quickly vanish [Takes one full post outside the area of effect to remove the soporific effect of the reiatsu, begins once more upon re-entry.]
For: Bankai Name: Kafun [Pollen] Type: Passive Cost: None Range: Short - Long Description: If the Poppy blooms aren't destroyed before they die naturally, the withered flower disintegrates into the atmosphere after a few minutes as tiny shards of light. These behave exactly like previous shards that travel through the air until the integrate themselves into the ground, or other structure, again to begin the process over. As the initial circle grows into an expanding ring, the attribute of sustaining debilitating effects is still preserved as the cannibalized energy converges into the center of the ring, where Urahara first activates Bankai. [Basically means that due to the nature of this bankai, once it is released then it is released indefinitely until it is actively destroyed or sealed.]
“Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.” ― Sun Tzu HISTORY:What can be said for a mere, honest, handsome and perverted businessman like Kisuke Urahara? Many things, that's what! He was a man born a baby like many others, but he was male so that cuts out half the population. His parents were male and female, one having male genitalia while the other female; they weren't hermaphrodites. And he lived with them for most of his life, his living life that is. He had to leave the room extension-turned-bachelor pad at some point. Growing up in comfort the male man boy was given what he was needed and denied what he didn't; for the most part that was love, care and three round meals a day, while on the other it was fast horses, fast geisha and nunchuks.
Academia for Urahara consisted of three separate buildings, each getting progressively bigger as he managed to survive each respective gauntlet; puberty, overdeveloped sociopaths and the worst of all, sake. But it wasn't all Medics rushing in to collect the bloody severed limbs and public humiliation; Urahara, while not the most popular, was cool in his own respect and a series of groups of close friends recognized this through out his life. 'Getting the girl' was surprisingly few and far between for such alternative humor and intellect; undeniably attractive, Urahara simply preferred women he could tease with over exaggerated signals of affection rather than seeking true love. Perhaps putting it off for so long was a bad idea, seeing as how he kicked the bucket a little earlier than he might have liked at the age of twenty four; suffocating to death. He had been electrocuted by a stray lightning strike while attempting to fly a kite during a storm and swallowed his tongue in the seizure; not the prettiest way to go.
One minute you can smell your own ass burning, the next a cool breeze wafts by and a child knocks into you while running past playing with other children. Needless to say, Kisuke Urahara now unknowingly a resident of the life-after-death populace was something of confused. Why wasn't he dead? What was that strange taste in his mouth and why was he surrounded by old people?
The only reasonable deduction he could make was he must have been dead; where else could you reside in such a large home with absolutely no rent? Acting on his most pressing concern; house prices in the area, Urahara learned that he had in fact died and was now existing in a place called Rukongai. His reaction wasn't one of the norm, but then again, neither was he. Kisuke Urahara did what he did best; he went with it. No man, woman, child or Raccoon is invulnerable, and Urahara was no different; the knowledge he would never meet those he knew again and the fact he died undeniably shook him. Still, he existed and that was all that was left for him. The comfort Soul Society offered had to be his and so it was.
Despite dying young in a freak lightning accident and never knowing true love, Urahara was pretty lucky. Alone and in a world he didn't know, wandering aimlessly sure as hell paid off for him; finding his way into a particularly well guarded and spacious Mansion, backpacking adventure number three was unfortunately cut short. Not for his lack of a backpack, but for the fact he was caught by a positively attractive young woman. Thankfully however, Urahara's score was just high enough in word weaving to score a successful bluff and she seemed to have taken a liking to him; and didn't have him killed... Again...
In a whirlwind of dead garments and swords Kisuke Urahara found himself a resident in the Mansion belonging to the young girl he bumped into and in further education once again; the Shinigami Academy. Turns out she was some sort of Noble and the place belonged to her, goes by the name Yoruichi and has a good left hook on her. A painful lessoned learned after a night drinking with another of her male friends; Tessai. Big lad, probably played Rugby when he was alive.
The years rolled by and Urahara showed promise, much more than he even would have guessed. A Jack of all Trades, Urahara was different in the sense that while most are good in one area, he was good in everything that he did. Although, nothing beat the feeling of beating someone else and Urahara specialized in the use of hand-to-hand combat. The training with his now good friend Yoruichi provided him with more than enough practice with the Shinigami technique called Shunpo. Graduating quickly, he was placed within the Second Division, Yoruichi's Division, and found himself again quickly ascending the Ranks and Seats. Eventually gaining the third seat and title of 'corps commander of the Detention Unit' a.k.a. the Maggot's Nest.
As it's name would imply, the Maggot's Nest wasn't exactly the greatest place Urahara could have been stationed. It was filled the greatest threats to Soul Society as a whole and he was in charge of making sure they didn't break out or generally run amok. He succeeded, and with his bare hands. It was forbidden to bring any weapons of any kind within the Nest should the worst happen, so it was left to him to train diligently in order to be able to subdue everyone contained therein with his bare hands. An interesting fact; no one quits Soul Society, they either die, or are taken out from the Academy under the guise of finding something better to do, and being sent there. It was also in this hole Urahara met the man that would become his successor to both his Captaincy and as head of the Research and Development Institute; Kurotsuchi Mayuri. A pale insect of a man, but damned intelligent. Almost as much as himself. Almost.
It would take many, many years and several ground breaking inventions, most of them piston shaped, before Urahara would be recognized and eligible to be nominated for Captain material. A decision Yoruichi's personal retainer Soifon took personal insult to, however, as they talked about it at great length, it became clear Soifon was simply infatuated with Urahara and upset at the thought of being separated from him. With quiet dignity, Urahara let his lack feelings for her known and decided not to hold it against her, like the gentleman he was. The previous twelfth Division Captain had been promoted to the mysterious 'Zero Division', and left the spot open for someone else to fill.
Finding success, the lucky sod, Kiskue Urahara did indeed become the new Captain of the Twelfth Division, white haori and all. Although, his ascension wasn't exactly all he thought it might have been; his lieutenant, one Hiyori Sarugaki, was probably the most aggressive and disrespectful person he had ever met. Not that aggression and disrespect was the problem, aggression and disrespect focused on him was; he was fragile enough as it was without being beaten every couple of minutes. Compounded by the fact, in her eyes, Urahara tried to replace her former Captain tensions were high. The only thing that could remedy the situation was a day trip.
Having Hiyori escort him into the Maggot's Nest, Urahara told her of the procedures concerning Soul Society and it's prisoners; how no one simply leaves, even with Tank Cats, his own thoughts on the imprisonment of Shinigami and Souls alike. It was a nice day out. While there, Urahara also enlisted the aid of Kurotsuchi Mayuri, his third seat and second in command to the just as newly established Research and Development Institute. One big happy family.
Compared to the other Captains, Kisuke Urahara had a fairly short run; a decade or two at the most before having to run for his life and the lives of eight of his friends and companions. It all stemmed from one of his inventions; the Hōgyoku 'Orb of Distortion'. Without getting into the details of such a touchy subject, Urahara created a device which could break the line separating Shinigami and Hollow and, despite his best efforts to keep it hidden, Sosuke Aizen managed to acquire it. Testing the extent of it's power, he endangered the lives of eight high standing Shinigami and brought about Kisuke Urahara's exile. Not one to be completely defeated however, Urahara managed to escape with those that had been affected along with the previous Captain of the Kidō Corps, Tessai Tsukabishi got a promotion, and his former Captain, Yoruichi Shihōin. Thus, the Vizard were born.
Enter Geta-Bōshi 'Mr. Hat-and-Clogs'!
The Kisuke Urahara we all know and love had taken residence in the infamous Karakura Town and had set up shop. Urahara Shōten was an out of the way place Shinigami could visit on their off days or while on a mission where they could buy items of a particular nature. The majority of his Exile was spent there catering to the occasional need of Shinigami and lazing around. Tessai had chosen to stay with Urahara as Manager of the store, but even he needed someone to delegate tasks to, thus Jinta and Ururu; mysterious children possibly created by Urahara to nullify any Child Protection Laws with abilities far surpassing that of normal Humans. Everything, for the most part, was simple; until a ginger kid with a knack for spotting the Souls of the dead came into his life. Rukia Kuchiki gave him her power and unlocked his potential of a Shinigami; she began to teach him the whole package of being a Shinigami and bought a Gigai from Urahara in order to do so twenty four seven. It must have been very annoying.
When Soul Society caught wind of this and moved to take Rukia back with the intention of executing her for breaking the Law, Ichigo rose up to defend her, only to be beaten into the ground without so much as a second round. Urahara's kind nature prompted him to take Ichigo under his wing; teach and guide him before giving him and his small band of spiritually aware Humans and a Quincy the means to rescue her. Perhaps not the soundest plan ever, but somehow, it worked. Rukia was saved, but Urahara's shady dealings and Aizen's plans for domination came into light. He had sealed the Hōgyoku into the Gigai Rukia owned and it was revealed the unrest Ichigo and Co. created was nothing but a distraction from Aizen's real plot to steal the Orb of Distortion for himself.
After learning all he could from the gang upon their return to the real world; Aizen's betrayal, Rukia's survival, house prices remaining affordable despite economic recession, Urahara had little time to think before the Arrancar themselves attacked. Fighting in unison with Yoruichi against the tenth Espada, Yammy, the situation seemed to be in control. Until the fourth Espada, Ulquiorra, stepped in to call an end to the proceedings. They had survived, score one to the good guys. Injuries were sustained and Urahara, the good samaritan, opened his home to shelter and train those willing to fight against Aizen and his Arrancar Army. There was also one other small factor his gestures of kindness pertained to, the secretion of Inoue Orihime and her 'unique' abilities.
That plan went tits up of course; Aizen's all seeing eye already had Orihime in it's sights and captured her before tea and biscuits had been handed out. It was left up to Urahara to once again create a gate into Hueco Mundo for the super team as well as organize and prepare for Aizen's eventual invasion of the real Karakura Town.
With all that went on in that war, it's a surprise that Urahara isn't either dead or back in service with the Gotei to be perfectly honest, but he would rather be where he ended up after it all.
