✖ COUNT TO TEN FALL APART AND THEN START AGAIN; ALWAYS STAYS THE SAME, NOTHING EVER CHANGES. TAGS -- WORDS -- NOTES first post ever woo~ trying not to godmod too hard xD The courtyard was in assembly; all around, the Shinigami of Squad 10 were gathered, fringing about the various buildings and walls that enclosed the wide, flat space. The palette of white, yellow and black was rather plain, but about the Seireitei it was uniform. This day, Squad 10 was electing its new Lieutenant... in a trial by combat.
The challenge was simple; face the Captain, and be judged. A slight oddity among the sea of shihakusho, Hideyoshi had stood with his tuxedo, ironically informal, though he did not see it as such. The battles that had occurred previously had been nothing special; most of the others, regardless of seat, had fallen fairly easily... and now, it was Hideyoshi's turn. There did not seem to be any particular order to the participation; it was as though it had been randomized, but for whatever reason... Hideyoshi had been drawn last.
This was not unusual. Though his servitude had never been begrudging, the Shinigami had also never been the most voluntary of individuals. He was a part of the Squad because had shown power and prowess, but otherwise... little was known of him. He could not have been said to have friends, though this did not mean he was resented. He occupied the metaphorical corner, and had since his arrival a relatively short time ago.
Knowing this was his part, Hideyoshi shrugged away from the obscurity of the crowds, out into the loosely defined 'ring'. The previous competitor moped off, largely uninjured but for his pride. Hideyoshi's face was deadpan as he faced his Captain; he had hardly spoken to the man before, and was not even certain how much the commander even knew of him. Regardless, he was not afraid; he had quiet confidence in his abilities that allowed him to stand erect. His left hand clutched Awashin'ai's scabbard at his left hip, primed to be drawn.
The weight of Jin Hoshigawa's Reiatsu was likely enough to sunder the lower Shinigami if released in full, but for the moment it was not too overpowering. Squarely facing the man, Hideyoshi merely nodded and spoke one respectful word.
"Captain."
And following such, he clutched his zanpakuto's hilt with his right hand and slid it from his scabbard, resting it at a forty-five degree angle upward in front of his chest, one-handed. Despite the obvious difference in power between the two individuals, Hideyoshi had no wish to initiate.

Words: WHDC Notes: Fresh meat! Tags: Hideyo He's not an upright Dog But an on all fours dog ! There was an eerie silence in the division. One after another the entire division that wanted the position stepped up, and each time they were knocked down. Jin was in desperate need for a Lieutenant. With the increase in attacks, the arrancar still on the move, and the gotei in an absolute mess, a second pair of hands would make his job much easier; and yet, despite the need for one, not a single one of his division members made the cut. He was starting to get agitated. Yes he grew stronger in the past few months, and yes he was already more powerful, but a simple test of strength and determination...was that so hard to give? Just a tenacious attitude, hard work, and some simple strength.
Jin was ready to throw in the towel, take the position himself and call it Nij. He groaned, his eyes staring down the entire crowed of people. They were either shuddering in fear, or laughing at one another for their own failed attempts. Jin placed is hand on the hilt of his sword, swinging it fiercely he brought it around and started to sheath it; but before he could reach the end, before the top of the hilt - because the sword lacked a cross guard - touched the edge of the sheath, Jin noticed the frame of another man enter his field of vision. He must of have one more person to test. He brought his left hand to his lips, two fingers just barely touching the pink flesh as thoughts started to storm inside his mind. He took in a deep breath, making a mental note of the man before him.
He wasn't like the others. He stood tall, his person didn't show any fear. He had his sword ready like he knew what was going to happen. Jin smirked, he knew this man. Not personally, he couldn't possibly know every unseated shinigami but he knew this man before him. His reiatsu was strong, and any time anyone in his division had reiatsu even beyond that of a fourth seat, Jin would know them. Standing straight up himself he drew his sword. His crimson hued eyes stared the man down, one hand raising to brush his hair out from his face while a soft breeze strolled bye. "I like you. You have courage....You're names Hideyoshi right? You've been moving up in the world. Jin readied himself, bringing his blade to his side parallel to his waist.
"Let's see if you got what it takes..." Before the man even had a chance to reply, Jin shunpoed. He didn't go his top speed, there was no point to. He knew he outsped his entire division and half of the gotei, why bother with his max? Reaching the mans front, Jin's left arm would come forward, aiming to punch the younger shinigami square in the chest while his right arm, with his sword, would come striking down toward his chest. The catch was, the blunt side was what was coming down, and not the blade. He didn't need, nor want to explain why one of his subordinates ended up dead.

✖ COUNT TO TEN FALL APART AND THEN START AGAIN; ALWAYS STAYS THE SAME, NOTHING EVER CHANGES. The compliments were met with a mere inclination of the head; from birth, Hideyoshi had learned to show inexorable humility, even if you did not feel it. Truth be told, he had already known himself to be a class higher than the men that surrounded him, many sporting wounds, though some having been fortunate enough to be granted the mercy of a mere disarming or other harmless submission. Never once did Hideyoshi truly believe Jin had exerted anything close to his true power, and that was rather frightening to consider.
Still, the man was not fazed; telling words were given, and he knew quite instantly that his Captain was to attack; he seemed rather straightforward, like that. Though his posture had been lax, this was intentional; no rigidity was left in it to compromise movement, as he knew his first maneuver would have to be an evasion. His eyes had focused intently on the Captain, and noticed quite soon after he had disappeared. Since the attacker held his sword in his right hand, Hideyoshi thought it only logical to move to his own right and outside of the attack range. Awashin'ai's white surface strayed, quite unused for the moment as Hideyoshi tried to shunpo off to his right, seeing the straight extension of the Shinigami's fist breeze past his chest as he swung his stance around at the left shoulder.
Only the thus far unseated officer's blue-green eyes betrayed his panic; obstinately, the rest of his expression remained unchanged as both warps completed, with Hideyoshi fortunately absent for the delivery of the strike. Through his own step he had brought himself only a short couple of meters away from the strike, but merely dodging the blow was a weak action, and since few had thus far attempted it, Hideyoshi thought that perhaps retaliation would be an impressive course of action.
Usually, he cared little for making a note of himself... but serving under the important was a position he now felt himself aspiring for the familiarity of, suddenly. That, and his adrenaline was pumping.
As quick as he possible could he brought himself to a full halt, regaining full composure, and then stepped back in; he crossed his arms as he dove right back into the wolf's den, extending his blade one-handed over his left shoulder, and horizontally cleaved a swipe out of the air, reversing his wind-up vehemently. The slice was aimed at the side of Jin that had been open, but the Captain possessed celerity in a caliber far above Hideyoshi's own, so this would unlikely still be the case.
Still, the intent roared in the fierceness of Hideyoshi's eyes, if they happened to be spotted... Burning like a warmthless flame.

Words: WHDC Notes: Fresh meat! Tags: Hideyo He's not an upright Dog But an on all fours dog ! A wicked smile instantly made it's way onto the mans face; his eyes were wide, and his teeth bared outward. There wasn't a single seated, or unsteated officer that actually dodged his attack. The others merely fell, cried, or quit before Jin even managed to make it to them. This was a grand turn of events. Jin watched the man, his head turning to follow his subtle movements, though his body seemed to stay in place. Jin was far more calculating than he let on, letting his opponents think he loved to charge into the fray without a plan; but there was always a plan. Always a contingency for if that plan should fail, always something up his sleeve. That's why when the man started to move not away, but toward him, Jin started to think of what to do. Well, there was always one place to start.
Using the arc from his previous swing, Jin brought his arm from under him, and arced the sword upward to cover his left shoulder. This blocked the mans intended path as their swords clashed together. Jin smirked before taking a firm stance, and pushing off with his sword to attempt and repel the young shinigami, Even if by some god given gift the man managed to stand his groun, Jin wouldn't simply stand there. Shunpoing with a soft swoosh of the wind, He appeared a couple meters from the man. Bringing his sword from his side up to his shoulder resting the cold steel against the cloth of his shihakusho. "Very good. Very, very good. You see that class?!" He started, walking to look at the other shinigami, stopping and then pointing toward Hideyo just before stabbing his blade into the ground.
"Retaliation! When you're here. Fighting me. I am not your captain! I am not your friend! I am your enemy! And you need to be ready for anything!" He wasn't sure if the man would know what was going to happen, if he would relax at the sight of Jin giving a speech, but if he did. If for even a moment he stopped to admire the scene, it would turn out ill-favored for the young man. With a defining crack the captain used his most potent shunpo to appear before the other man, bringing his knee skyward, aiming for his stomach. What the other man did after this was going to help determine if he was worth Jin's time, or if he should just go back to being an unseated officer.

✖ COUNT TO TEN FALL APART AND THEN START AGAIN; ALWAYS STAYS THE SAME, NOTHING EVER CHANGES. Of course, the attack was blocked, and Hideyoshi found his arm twitching about slightly as he pushed against the parry one-handed. Jin did not remain long, however; he warped away, and Hideyoshi pushed through empty air. With his enemy gone, he stepped back slightly, left-facing and neutral with both of his feet aligned towards the captain, sword held diagonally downward, pointing at the ground. Again, it was a posture designed for easy maneuverability - it may have made a lesser opponent complacent, but with Jin's level it would hardly matter anyway.
Awarded for his perseverance, Hideyoshi remained expressionless while commemorated. Was that truly all? That margin of triumph? He stood up, some, easing off of his pose. Instinct told him to bow at the praise, especially under so many eyes, and thus he did so, coming up before swinging his sword out to the right as he brought his left hand across his chest and tipped over in a gesture of respect - a concerning note. Ready for anything?
There was a shadow.
Hideyoshi had only time to look up in alarm before a knee bloomed in his vision and took him directly in the gut - nothing the man held could have let him dodge something so fast. The force of it was like a cannon, and it knocked the Shinigami airborne; over in an arc he went, and the crowds cleared for him as he smashed unfortunately into a wall, adding duress to both his back and front. His breath shunted unceremoniously from him, the unseated officer slumped to the floor, where he was momentarily left alone, his form attended only by gingerly raised hands and uncertain murmurs that were too far away to be of any use to the injured man.
Was he defeated? Nay. His eyes opened, and he gathered himself, feeling the ache through his entire body as he used the wall for a support and slid grimly up it.
Quietly, eyes staring forth at his Captain, sword arm slightly dangling, he whispered two words;
"Kiku, Awashin'ai."
His sword dispersed; briefly, there was light from its expansion into a cloud, which, as Hideyoshi made an effort to stand properly and hold his right hand aloft, strove for both his hands and condensed again upon them. Now, the Shinigami wore two gauntlets of white, tough and flexible, trailing glimmers of Reiatsu off them. The sword had been reduced to a rawer form, retaining less definite shape at every point except the sharp edge, flowing energy skyward from its reverse side as it was held pointed directly at Jin Hoshigawa.
"You are the enemy, yes?" He inquired, his usually smooth voice growling through anger and agony. Needing no affirmation; the further: "There was one other thing you neglected to mention, Captain. The enemy... deserves the fullest extent of your power."
There had to be a little smugness in there, too. "My Shikai, gentlemen." He informed unnecessarily, without looking towards them, though a slight grin perked up through his pain.

Words: WHDC Notes: Fresh meat! Tags: Hideyo He's not an upright Dog But an on all fours dog ! Jin couldn't help but grin wildly. This wasn't like a normal grin, his lisp were being pulled from side to side as far as they could go, almost all of his teeth baring for the world to see. THIS was what he wanted in a Lieutenant. Getting up, continuing the fight. This was exactly what the others lacked. This was the power, and strength he needed around him to keep good relations within the division. Someone he could trust with his life, someone he could help ascend to great levels far beyond what he could have gained on his own. This WAS his lieutenant, but the battle wasn't over yet. He knew it, and he knew Hideyoshi knew it too. Hell, the entire division knew it, and they were so glued to their seats - so to speak - that not a single soul left their spots. This was the battle of the ages in the tenth division, and it was just getting started.
Jin was taken aback for a moment though when Hideyoshi started to speak. What he said wasn't false; no, on the contrary, it was very true, and Jin couldn't help but laugh to himself. Indeed, this was his lieutenant. "You're right. The enemy does deserve the fullest extent of your powers. Don't ever let the enemy off, always go into the fight with your strongest. If you wait, they could kill you, your friends, or the citizens we swore to protect." Jin smiled once more, leaping backwards grasping his sword by the hilt, and ripping it from the ground. He held it outward, toward his opponent. "And, Hideyoshi, on that note...allow me to show you my shikai." The reiatsu gathering around his entire person was immense, compared to most of those around him. He held it to such a level that no one would faint under it, but it was enough for everyone there to understand that he was, indeed, a captain.
"Death be with you. Zetsumei." All of the reiatsu he had gathered all, in something akin to a zerg rush, filled his blade. The seemingly plain looking sword started glowing a bright red before in an instant it lengthened, the plain sword no longer so. The hilt was a beautiful black, simple as that with the cross guard appearing from seemingly no where, with three dog heads swirling one another while the blade taking on the most change. Stirling silver turned to blackened steel with white, floating flames floating a midst one another. "And this is my Shikai. Now come at me with your best Hideyoshi.

✖ COUNT TO TEN FALL APART AND THEN START AGAIN; ALWAYS STAYS THE SAME, NOTHING EVER CHANGES. Ah. Perhaps Hideyoshi had summoned a little more from his words than he had intended; it was obvious here that, no matter how much persistence he exerted, he was still vastly outmatched, and if truth be told, he was largely at the mercy of however much power Jin decided to exert.
This did not, of course, mean that he was in any way resigned to any particular fate. The man had hardly chanced to use his Shikai; scarcely had he required it before, and had only released it in a show of power. His mastery of the fair maiden's abilities was limited, but he could at least wield them. That perhaps paled in comparison to the Captain's undoubted mastery of his Zanpakuto's first release, which he chose to display; the black, searing blade was quite a sight, and it sobered Hideyoshi even further, which was apparently possible. He frowned; his concentration was total.
Hideyoshi's own blade lowered, and he separated himself from the wall and the division members with a light stroll forward, Awashin'ai hanging loosely at his side. "Of course, Captain." He uttered, half sincere and half fabricated in the interest of impressing this man, though he had a feeling he already had, and that this fight had entered a tier higher than the initial test of mettle.
This was a test of strength.
After a few paces, the Shinigami drew up both of his arms, rather akin to his previous attack, and swiped his gauntlet-clad hands aside; instantly, they spouted a gaseous substance in all directions that whooshed slightly as it expanded. It was not toxic, nor did it emanate any great amount of Reiryoku, but it did quickly shroud the area for about twenty-five meters around and drastically lower visibility. Of course, there was the issue that anyone with a high sensory capability could spot a being without sight, but it was perhaps an assistant to Hideyoshi's exploits, if only slightly. Plus, it was an enabler for other abilities.
Quickly, everyone around Hideyoshi would find themselves unable to see outside ten meters of themselves. This caused some commotion in the ranks, but nothing on Hideyoshi's face showed that he cared. Hideyoshi's own sensory capabilities, coupled with the fact that the Captain was vastly more powerful than any around, allowed his form to be quite visible, even if it were not. There was only one thing left to say.
"Otenonai Ken."
And with that, Hideyoshi dove into warp speed, and as he landed the shunpo, was nearly face-to-face with Jin, providing he was not quick enough to dodge the attack. Awashin'ai had been pulled back for a stabbing motion, and when driven forward with only the officer's right hand, produced replicas that bloomed in the space about, cloud-like but solid, to mirror the stab at the Captain from multiple other angles. |
