OOC: The butterfly swordsTahno narrowed his eyes in irritation. The first two strikes had landed as planned. And then the boy had had the good sense to jump out of the way. He easily tracked the boy’s movements, quickly pinpointing where Gray landed in the branches above. Now would have been a good time for Tahno to move as well, but he hesitated. He preferred ranged combat, hands down - he wasn’t called Artemis for shits and giggles. But it wasn’t like he couldn’t fight at close range. And he bet Gray thought he had the advantage with close combat. A devious grin lit up Tahno’s face. He would have to suffer through the icy cold, but it wasn't the end of the world. He lived in the rural Czech Republic. He'd be fine. So he waited patiently, pulling all but 100 of Matky zuřivost in close and melding the needles into a pair of large butterfly swords. Soon enough, the impatient young Fullbringer came crashing through the trees and landed just above Tahno. That was really quite a stroke of luck for Gray. Tahno suspected the boy was shite when it came to sensing reiatsu, so it was impressive that Gray not only managed to pick the right tree but also miraculously managed to land so close to Tahno. The boy had good instincts. Tahno’s grin only widened as he spun to face Gray and shifted his weight so that it was on his back leg. The boy was already leaping down to him, aiming a strong slash with his remaining white blade. He deftly parried the slash with his right sword and ducked his head to avoid receiving a faceful of ice that flared out from the boy’s blade. He quickly broke his blade free of the ice and swung downwards with it while thrusting at the boy’s left shoulder with his other sword. He jerked the left blade up and back before unleashing a series of slashes at every available opening he could find. If wakes of ice flew at him, he paid no mind to them – shrugging it off like it was only a minor annoyance. He didn’t hold back, putting every ounce of his physical strength into each strike. Surely Gray should have guessed he might know a thing or two about close combat? After all, he had shattered the boy’s ice sword with one well-placed swing of a bat. He strove to keep his breathing steady as he engaged Gray. It wasn’t heavy from exertion, though he did pant slightly. He’d spent too much time training his body to be worn down so easily. Hopefully Gray was not quite so conditioned as Tahno. Each strike was relentless and rapid-fire. He allowed very little time to separate the landing of one blade and the follow-up from the second. He refused to give the boy an opening, refused to let up. He ducked down after a particularly vicious double slash at Gray’s torso and swung a low kick at Gray’s legs. He hoped to trip the boy and send him crashing to the forest floor. At the very least it would send the boy backwards or down as he tried to avoid the strike. Whatever the case, Tahno leapt backwards and to the left. He used Bringer Light to swiftly bring himself down from the trees. Settling into a solid stance, he said, “ Got anything else for me, boy? The Hollow was a greater challenge than you.” tagged ~ Gray Fullbuster words ~ 578 stats ~ HAN: 15; REI: 20; HAK: 20; SEI: 20; BUK: 20; HOH: 15 credits ~ post template by vitriol of on the edge. |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true]There's no need to change the past. Because of the past, we are who we are now. Every second, every action from then is linked to us here and now◣ | ◣As he dropped down from the higher branch, Gray saw the other man turn around to face him. But he had been expecting that. Instead of flinching or shying away, he only put more force into his swing in the hopes that he could overwhelm the other Fullbringer. But his slash was easily blocked. He didn't even have a chance to try and freeze the opposing blade. Not only that, but the other man had even known to duck to avoid the resultant blast of freezing Reiryoku from Gray's slash.
There went the possibility of having the advantage in close-combat.
Gray immediately pulled his bladed left hand back and up to try and block the thrust, simultaneously forming another icy short sword in his right hand. At best, he was able to deflect the other blade slightly upwards in his haste, causing it to slice across the top of his shoulder instead of impaling it. Gray tried not to let it faze him; he didn't have the time to spare for that. He jerked his right hand up, lashing out with the ice sword to try and deflect the man's next slash, but it ended up getting knocked downward. Gray was forced to block the next with the battered blade on his left arm. More cracks appeared.
Gray struggled to keep up with the other Fullbringer, and despite his best efforts, more cuts began to appear on his body. Every time he managed to block a strike, his blades came closer to shattering. He blocked another, and the blade on his left broke apart, becoming unusable. he saw the man coming in for yet another slash and threw the remaining ice sword out in front of him to block. There was a harsh cracking sound as fractures formed across the entirety of the blade's surface. Shit. Gray didn't even have time to form another blade before the next slash came, blowing through the sword and shattering it like it was nothing, cutting a deep laceration across his torso in the process.
Gray had barely registered the injury before something knocked him off balance. His eyes widened as his world tilted to the side and he slid off the branch. Instinctively, he reached out to try and grab it, but his fingers only brushed against bark and he plummeted to the ground. Luckily, they hadn't been too high off the ground. Gray only had the breath knocked out of him when he hit the ground. But when he tried to get up, he found that he could only raise off the ground a few centimetres before falling back down. He was shaking a lot for some reason, too. This is bad. He realized that he must have been hurt worse than he had originally thought. In fact, he was covered in blood already.
A few metres away, the other man lowered himself to the ground. Ignoring his taunt, Gray focused on his opponent’s feet and planted his bloodstained left hand on the ground. What he was about to do was pretty cheap, but he didn’t have much of a choice. He didn’t want to die. Red ice snaked across the ground in front of him, aiming to ensnare the other Fullbringer’s feet if it reached them. If it was successful, the ice would continue to travel up his body until it froze him completely. And the red ice wouldn’t be easy to escape from if he were caught.◣ | ◣TAGGED: Tahno ◣WORDS: 581 ◣NOTES: xxx

Tahno watched patiently as Gray first tried to get up before abandoning the effort. He had beaten Gray – badly. Between the numerous cuts and falling several feet from a tree, Tahno doubted the kid’s body could put up with much more. He would have felt bad about it, but Gray had made himself prey. Prey didn’t receive pity or sympathy. They were hunted with little mercy. The only reason Gray was in this good of condition was because the Micans would be pissed if she found out Tahno had accidentally killed a potential recruit over a trifle. He had better things to do than listen to her rant and rave over a mistake like that – like sleep or read a book.
The boy didn’t respond to Tahno’s taunt. That wasn’t exactly like Gray, from what he had seen, but he had dealt a fair bit of damage to the kid in the past couple minutes. But the Obelisk quickly realized why Gray was ignoring him. Red ice, much like the ice blade he had shattered, was rapidly creeping towards him across the ground. He almost jumped out of the path of the ice when an idea flashed through his mind. Instead of moving, he let go of his butterfly swords and let the water return to a globe. He then pulled more water from Tianshang and combined the two to form a semi-translucent sphere around his body. He didn’t pour much of his reiatsu into the sphere – it wouldn’t be necessary to protect him from the red ice.
He stood there calmly, without a trace of emotion on his face, as the ice rapidly crept up the sphere and encased it. He crossed his arms and kept his eyes on Gray until the ice completely blocked his view. Soon, there was nothing but red surrounding him as the ice finished encasing him. It would take a while for Matky objetí to disperse, but he didn’t need to see Gray or even be physically close to make his next move. Closing his eyes, he brought the remaining one hundred needles of Matky zuřivost to where he could feel Gray’s reiatsu signature and simply hung the needles above the boy. He knew Gray couldn’t get far.
He kept the needles hanging for a minute or two, just letting the boy wonder when they would strike and how long it would take his body to bleed out before they did. He then stretched his hands out – a maestro standing before his orchestra at the start of a concert. With several flicks of his hands, he gathered the needles into groups of five. One group he fired towards the ice that covered him, causing it to shatter as the needles pierced the thin sheet and caused the sphere beneath to violently shudder. His line of sight clear, he shook his head at Gray. Focusing on each group individually, he began firing the needles with unnerving precision to various points of Gray’s body. Four groups fired at the boy’s hands and feet in an attempt to pin Gray to the ground. The rest fanned out over his torso. So precise was his aim that if the needles struck, they would neither pierce internal organs nor rupture major blood vessels.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true]There's no need to change the past. Because of the past, we are who we are now. Every second, every action from then is linked to us here and now◣ | ◣Gray had been expecting the man to move out of the way of the ice for sure. When he didn't, the Fullbringer was suspicious. From what he had seen, the guy could have easily evaded it, and the red ice wasn't exactly hard to miss. Gray had only even tried because, well, he had to. He had to do something if at all possible. Otherwise, he was admitting defeat. Since he could die whether he admitted defeat or not, there was no point in being a pansy. He wasn't going to go down without a fight.
Even though his vision was getting fuzzy, Gray still saw a sphere of water form around the other man. Was he really trying to stop ice with water? No way. No one could be that stupid. Something was up. But then again, why would he need a plan or anything? The fact that Gray was still on the ground made it obvious enough that he wasn't doing much of anything else anytime soon. There was only one obvious answer, and really pissed Gray off, even in his current state. He's playing with me. Gray's eyes darkened as he realized this. He couldn't really do anything about it, and that made it even worse.
Soon enough, the other Fullbringer was encased in a sphere of red ice. He probably couldn't even see Gray. Even though he knew it would be in vain, Gray tried to get up again, only to fall back down with a gasp of pain. God damn it... If his blade hadn't broken at the last second, he probably wouldn't be in this mess. He had a golden opportunity to get away but he couldn't do it.
Gray's suspicions were confirmed when he saw an array of water needles move until they were right above him. No... shit. He had a feeling that even if he did manage to move, they would follow him. He was so screwed. Even now, that bastard was just sitting in his bloody snow-globe or whatever the fuck it was supposed to be, and letting him wait. Was he trying to build suspense? He had already won. What was the point of it all?
"You... sick fuck!" He had meant to yell, but it came out as more of a shaky whisper. In that instant, a few of the needles shot towards the red sphere and broke it. Gray only glared at the other man from his spot on the ground, hoping he had heard. Before he could try anything else or even get another word out, several of the water needles embedded themselves in his left hand. Despite himself, he let out a cry of pain at that, flinching back before he felt a similar pain in his other hand and both feet. And then that very same pain, magnified considerably, spread throughout his upper body.
Now he was flat against the ground and he couldn't move if he wanted to. Gray had no idea what had happened. It was pretty obvious given the needles, but he didn't care to guess. He only stared at a tree that was a few feet to the right of him, losing focus as his eyes started to flutter closed.◣ | ◣TAGGED: Tahno ◣WORDS: 535 ◣NOTES: xxx

Tahno felt a distant pang of sorrow as Gray cried out in pain. And just like that, Artemis had disappeared into the depths of his heart once more. His arms dropped and his shoulders hunched slightly as he surveyed his handiwork. No matter how much he enjoyed the heat of battle, some part of him would always despise hurting another human being. He had felt monstrous when killing his own uncle – a man who had deserved death as surely as the enemies of God deserved the Lord’s wrath. How could he not hate hurting someone who didn’t really deserve being hunted like an animal? It bothered him. His Micans’ conscription order would always bother him. He understood why it might be a necessary step. He understood that it was his duty to follow the order without complaint. And he did. That didn’t mean he had to like it.
He sighed once more. All he had wanted to do was quietly dispose of a Hollow and be on his way. Instead, he had nearly killed a young boy. “Bože, odpusť mi za vinu jsem spáchal tento den,” he murmured sadly as the sphere around him began to shimmer. The needles that had pierced through Gray’s body and pinned him to the ground lost their shape. They flowed up into the wounds they had caused. After a few more moments, the sphere of water streamed away from Tahno and wrapped gently around Gray’s body. Using a brief burst of Bringer Light, Tahno landed gently beside the battered boy and knelt down. A pool of blood was beginning to form underneath Gray, which was more than a little worrisome. But he was confident. He’d saved idiots – including himself – from grave damage before. Reaching out, he rested his hands on the water. It began to glow with an eerie green light, much like the jade comb, as it entered into Gray’s wounds. Suffused with Tahno’s reiatsu, the water began stitching Gray back together again.
The Obelisk’s gaze was sorrowful and grave as he focused on his task. “I told you to leave before I lost my patience. Surely you realized there was a large difference between our strength,” he said as he worked. His tone was deeply pained and his voice quickly dropped to a whisper. “I did not want to have to hurt you like this.” He had to stop speaking after that. Anything more and he might start weeping. Even though he doubted Gray would see his tears, you never showed weakness in front of an opponent. It could be argued that his mercy in healing Gray was weak, but he would argue that there was a season for mercy just as there was a season for ruthlessness. So he patiently fixed what he could, stabilizing Gray over the course of an hour before finally scooping the kid up and standing. It was exhausting work and he really didn’t want to use any more energy, but he couldn’t leave Gray here. At the very least, he had to get back out of the woods and to a road before calling headquarters to come pick them up.
He stumbled slightly on his first step before shaking his head and mustering up his reserves. He leapt forward with a burst of Bringer Light, making his way back to the lake first to get his bearings before getting out of the forest as swiftly as he could. He prayed to God that the boy would last long enough for Tahno to get him medical attention.
END
