HISTORY:
Hideyoshi Shirotaka was born into the family profession: unconditional servitude to the Byakka family and all their heirs or heiresses. This task included not only the job of maintaining their property and serving their whims and desires, but also their protection: From a young age, Hideyoshi was trained in all sorts of fighting professions, mainly of the sword kind, and the use of ranged weaponry to protect the rich family at all costs. Officially, the Shirotaka family were 'butlers', but the reality carried far more weight than that.
Though some may have considered the profession to be a terrible expenditure of one's lifetime, Hideyoshi never much minded. Before he was even the protector of the family - his father serving before him - he was brought to the family manor on occasion. Growing up alongside him was the family's heir, a girl by the name of Eri.
When Hideyoshi was sixteen, his father passed away, taken by illness. Immediately, Hideyoshi was required to attend the Byakka family's every need, whichever hours of the day they wished, though most often the house was left to only three occupants; Eri Byakka, her younger brother Sato and Hideyoshi himself. The elders of the house were always away on some business of the country or other.
Over the next four years, as was perhaps only natural, Hideyoshi grew to love Eri, fawning after her every need with willingness that had to largely be kept private. Of course, a relationship between the two parties would have been considered unsightly; though the two families were tied tightly through bonds of old, love was forbidden to be the binding.
A noble was assigned to be Eri's husband on her eighteenth birthday, while Hideyoshi bordered on his twentieth. The boy's name was Jiro, of the Hikaru family. Though the butler wished desperately for an unbiased excuse to despise the boy, he could scarcely produce one; Jiro was kind, devoted and perhaps even a tad handsomer than Hideyoshi himself.
Naturally, the good servant he was, Hideyoshi had never revealed his love to Eri, and he thought he never intended to. Though they had been near one another for quite some years, and Hideyoshi could always put optimism to work, he never quite found out; did she love him? Could they have run off somewhere, had a life together? He would never know.
For not long after Jiro's arrival on the scene, the family manor was attacked by some of the most efficient and well-equipped thugs the country had ever seen. Jiro, on site at the time, was slain in the gardens to his lady's defense; Eri, who had been accompanying him, was momentarily held hostage while the robbery commenced. Luckily, Sato was safely inside.
Hideyoshi, seeing the problem from a manor window, took up arms, and promptly slew three of the men as they attempted to rob the house - one with a crossbow bolt, two with a short-sword. He went to rescue Eri in the gardens, having reloaded, but the two men exchanged crossbow fire across the open yard and were simultaneously struck down.
Eri fled to Hideyoshi's side as he died, crying tears he saw through fading vision. Though there were many things he wanted to say in that moment, out of what he thought at the time to be kindness, he chose to smile at her as he passed from the world.
As a Plus, Hideyoshi spent the passing days in the Byakka manor's basement, forcing himself not to emerge and watch over Eri. He hardly heard them in those lonely days, eventually growing the impression that this existence was some sort of hell, one that he was creating for himself, but one that he must endure. He pondered thoughts of the men he had killed, and how he must never see Eri again; his chain began to corrode, and the apparently impending doom frightened him... Till the Shinigami arrived. Never giving her name, she cast him off into the afterlife.
Reincarnated in the spirit world, Hideyoshi found that something in his soul's make up seemed to hold high potential in this new reality. He lived on his own for many years, having ample skills and the demeanor to do so. He knew that Shinigami were able to return to the human world, if necessary, and thus the acquisition of such benefit became his only goal; fueled by the experience of killing, he trained himself in furious solitude.
Accepted into the Academy by the time he was only a total of 70 years old, his aspirations became apparent with his outspoken eagerness; reprimanded for his objectives, Hideyoshi was subject to a higher form of discipline than most, which, in a way, worked to his benefit, as he grew stronger than his fellows for it.
Alas, by the time he graduated into an officer, he knew Eri, a hundred and ten years of age by that point, would surely be dead; likely Sato as well. Never daring to return, he spent long years dormant and in mourning. Plagued by regret, he only caught the eye of the higher seats once he chose to emerge from what had been a solitude of simple servitude and purposely restricted potential, and quickly rose through the ranks of the 10th Division...
RP SAMPLE:
Kenta had arrived early.
This was not an inconsistency in the least; when a date was set, the soldier was there before those who came before, able to then expect and observe those moments longer, have the first move available to him. The Ikebana was slouched against a concrete wall with his shoulders; his skin, already swarthy in relation to its birth colour from the sun's rays, received the full force of noon that shone down from up above and bathed the city square in proud daylight. Passersby gave him a noticeable breadth thanks to the amount of smoke that hung about him; in that instant, he drew the half-burned cigarette from between his teeth and breathed out a rather flat and narrow stream of sickly white smog that quickly defied any rigid form and floated up into the atmosphere, some perhaps lagging on the alcove that hung above the green-clad character.
His newly-discovered half-sister was the reason for his stagnant presence this day, where he would usually be flowing along in a calm, goalless stroll. The Kusakage, also known as Kenta's half-brother, had not been allowed to meet with them, so in an effort to soften the blow of her twin's distance he had offered to take the girl shopping with what money he owned. And this, of course, was the rendezvous point, but it was still minutes off of the allotted time.
The soldier's hawk-like gaze pierced the crowd, scrutinizing idly; information gathering had been so well-ingrained in Kenta's brain that it had dug down into the deep recesses of habit. His naturally wide and frightening gaze caused any who met it to glance immediately away and go back to whatever it was that was their business, a reaction the soldier took some inward amusement in, but did not show externally. For the most part, however, the common people were boring, and he found himself hoping Amarisu was at least somewhat as timely as he was.
At least, that was until he appeared.
Only slightly shorter than the soldier himself, but with a bearing that paled this fact into insignificance, the man was adorned with an ebony garment that hung about his figure like a shadow, even as his hair was as bright a red as one could envision. There was nothing banal or pedestrian about this character; Kenta knew it immediately. Moving into view past a building some five meters away, the stranger paused, as though searching for something - or anything. If past experience was any dictator, he would be hard pressed to miss the soldier's hard, bright stare, which would be adorned in great contrast by a thoroughly cheery and inviting grin, canine teeth flashing in the sunlight.
Wherever the soldier sensed such power, unaccompanied by hostility, he could usually find a comrade.
