Surǽlia maintained eye contact with him for a moment after she made her ridiculous remark. Saving the world was a rather astounding thing for even the greatest of minds to conceive. The sheer vastness of the globe left little room for experimentation, exploration, or deviation from a straightforward plan, but forced a sort of improvisation and quick thinking that few people can truly muster. There was just so much to think about when it came to saving the world, and some people would be actually afraid of the daunting task. She hoped this “Unsing” wouldn’t be that type of person. Surǽlia lowered her eyes to the sidewalk, pondering his response as she received it.
She didn’t blame him. There wasn’t much on this earth worth protecting, especially not the millions of ignorant lazy slobs that fed off the earth like parasites. She remembered thinking the same thing often enough. She didn’t want to protect these rotten wastes of oxygen, the bustling cities, or the food harvesting meat factories that scatter the countryside. Still, she had to protect the beautiful things, and the people that did want to make a difference. She fought for those who cared, everyone else was just lucky enough to get stuck behind her shield. Surǽlia was sure the rest of the consecro felt this way, even the Micans, but for them it stood on religious ground. Frankly, Surǽlia was never one to follow religion, but she did appreciate the faith that people had. It took a lot of guts to follow something that may not even be real. There were some that Surǽlia respected quite a bit, and others that she despised with a passion.
Hired? The Micans wouldn’t exactly appreciate Surǽlia hiring a mercenary for the cause. Sure it would be a fighter, but mercenaries can be bought by both parties. the choice was simple.
“I’m afraid you can’t be hired. You either join the cause, or I’ve been asked to kill you.” She let that hang in the air for a moment before continuing. “To be honest,” she tucked her hands back into her pockets, “I’d rather not. I fight to protect what I care about; everything else just happens to get caught behind my shield. It’s your choice.”
