The text above, somewhat shortened and corrupted, comes from a quotation of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum", section 1.10.32, by Cicero, written in 45 BC. The original text interests me not because it is at the root of the standard piece of dummy text, but for what it says (H. Rackham, 1914):
But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure? It just won't fade away

As soon as Kizo noticed Tsubaki’s hand move she shunpo’d to the right of her opponent, though she was quick enough to avoid being cut by the blade physically, it had managed to cut through her hakama right where the woman was aiming. When Kizomaru saw her opponent vanish off she looked around quickly, expecting an attack from behind, but she was more curious when she watched her settle on top of a candy cane pole. ”What the..?”’ |
[/color] She thought to herself, thinking it was a little odd that rather than take the possible opening and launching a counter attack that she just backed off instead. She decided not to ponder the matter too much; if Tsubaki was planning on keeping her distance then Kizo would simply have to make sure it was just as dangerous for her to be away as it could be keeping in a close range. Rather than jump ahead and launch another attack Kizomaru studied the structure on which the other woman was standing, thinking, maybe another frontal assault wasn’t the best way to go here. The more she stared at the pole the more she began thinking; until she came up with an idea. Taking into account the distance from where she stood to the pole, Kizomaru began focusing her reiryoku into a kido. ”Hado number thirty-one, Shakkaho!” She called only loud enough for herself to hear, aiming her outstretched hand at the top of the top of the candy cane where Tsubaki stood as she fired the moderately wide ball straight at her. Kizo wasn’t exactly concerned with whether or not the kido blast hit, especially when she noticed the ground below where the kido began had seemed to melt a little bit, her main focus was rather to blast the candy cane and knock her off; the aim was in hopes of doing some damage to her opponent as well but it wasn’t exactly necessary. Once the kido had been fired Kizomaru released her Shikai with a quick call of its release command, she made sure she shunpo’d away from the melted ground without stepping in any of it, she wasn’t sure how stuck she might get, but being sticky during a battle was something Kizo didn’t much like the thought of. Now standing to the far left of where she launched Shakkaho, she moved in closer to the pole at which she aimed, now standing a good four feet in front of it. Hoping Tsubaki was still distracted by the oncoming blast; Kizomaru aimed one of her blades down towards the gummy ground and slammed it down. ” Shadou Supaiku!” As soon as the words left her lips the shadows on the ground began to spike and wave towards Tsubaki’s left side, reaching up a total distance of five feet. If the spikes hit they could cause some deep puncture wounds, as the tips were as sharp as the blade of her wakizashi, the wounds would not kill but would hopefully do enough damage to Tsubaki to weaken her greatly. While the spikes might not reach the full height of the candy cane pole she was standing on, Kizo was counting on the Shakkaho from before to break the pole and throw Tsubaki off, and she was hoping that would help her land a hit on her opponent.
